Has anyone seen this Gaither video? If so, could you explain to me how
"Elvira" fits into the "gospel" line-up?
Just curious.

Joe sings about saving money for a marriage license so he and Elvira
can find a preacher and get married. This reinforces the Biblical
concept of marriage as a God ordained institution between one man and
one woman for life. "Elvira" has actually been considered for hymnals.

Ok, that was a stretch...lol.

How are you, Carol?

Thanks for asking. This new lifestyle takes some getting used to. It
was very hard after the kids all left and went back to their homes. It
is way too quiet around here. Some days are better than others, sunny
ones especially, but all in all I am hanging in. I have a great church
family if I need anything. I got the mower stuck in a muddy place the
other day and had to wait until our neighbor got home to pull me out
with his 4x4. We have had so much rain that even the dry looking grass
is squishy underneath. I certainly do appreciate everyone praying for
me. Thanks guys.

Are you asking someone to defend "Elvira" being there, or just asking how
it's presented on the video? I can do the latter.

While they were in town for the taping, they went to a show that Woody
Wright was doing and "crashed" it. It was at an outdoor fair. They showed
some the footage from that where the Oaks, GVB, and Ernie Haase/Signature
Sound were singing "Elvira," then they segued to the group singing it in the
studio with Tim Duncan having some fun singing the "oom papa mow mow" along
with Richard Sterban.

Maybe I'm the only one who noticed this, but about a year ago when I
heard EH&SS I thought Tim Duncan's voice sounded alot like Richard
Sterban's.

Yes, James, I think you're the only one who noticed. :o)

Seriously, I don't think they sound similar.

I agree with David. Actually, if Tim sounds like anybody now it is George
Younce.
Same nasal tonal quality at least.

He sounds like he's doing his dead level best to sound like George
Younce...and he comes close enough to make the fans happy.

I'll tell you what I'm basing my opinion of their sound alike voices
on. I first heard Sterban around 30 years or more ago when he was with
J.D. Sumner and The Stamps-I haven't heard him in person since then.
His voice back then reminded me very much of Tim Duncan's voice today.
When I say "am I the only one who noticed", I should have said-am I
the only one here that heard young Richard Sterban then, and how much
Tim Duncan sounds like Sterban did then.

Is that Sterban singing on "I'm Gonna Serve The Lord Today" with the Stamps?
I think it's on that Hall Of Fame collection that was releases seven or
eight years ago.

I really don't know, I'd have to hear the song because I don't
remember it.

Certainly is, David. That's a great song originally released on the
"Top of the Stamps" Skylite LP.

Thanks John. That being the case, I still don't think Tim Duncan sounds much
like Richard Sterban...then or now...aside from singing in a similar range.

I'll tell you one young bass singer who does sound like a cross
between Richard Sterban and Eric Bennett: Matt Fouch

No, I guess I just had a hard time seeing "Elvira" as a "gospel" song.
Seems like a lot of folk are stretching the definition to make something
fit where it really doesn't belong. Just my opinon.

Well, they do a Gospel segment on their country shows, I guess they
thought they should do a country segment on their Gospel show. You're
right, Elvira isn't a Gospel song anymore than "Leavin' Louisiana in
the Broad Daylight" or "Bobbie Sue". I was goofing around earlier.

Outside of the bass part, I have never thought Elvira was one of their
better country songs anyway...

The Cathedrals used to do "Go Jonah" to the tune of "Elvira". I heard
them do it once at the Brumley Sing and I thought they did a good job,
I remember that when they did an encore George Younce did the "oom
papa mow mow"

I suppose it's like Gov. Jimmie Davis singing "You Are My Sunshine" at
a gospel concert. It might not be a gospel song, but it's become part
of who they are as a singing entity.

Governor Davis was asked to sing at Bellevue when RG Lee was there and
had no intention of doing "Sunshine", but ended up doing it when Dr.
Lee and several others requested it.

I may be the only member of AMGS that heard Richard Sterban LIVE and
IN PERSON with the Stamps Quartet, but Matt Fouch 's name doesn't ring
a bell, so tell me more-who does he sing with,or is he solo? I think
both Sterban and Bennett are very good bass singers, so I imagine I
would Matt Fouch.
