James "Big Chief" Wetherington was southern gospel music's great, if
not the greatest rhythm bass singers of all-time, but Chief was not
only a great bass singer, he was also a self-taught musician and even
taught his daughter Diana to play an instrument.

What instrument did "Big Chief" Wetherington teach himself to play?

Credit for this trivia goes to "Big Chief's daughter Diana

Here is the message (in part) that I received from Diana Wetherington
Helton-

That's all the documented quartet singing but I know dad grew up in S.
GA singing and/or playing guitar with local groups from the time he
was old enough to actually hold an instrument. He was a self-taught
guitarist and when I was old enough to express an interest he bought
an old guitar (bigger than I was) and taught me. He later bought me a
beautiful Gibson electric (and taught me the ins and outs there) and
lastly a beautiful acoustic (that I still own and play) "Gospel"
labeled guitar that had been custom made for Mylon Lefevre. One of
these days I'm going to find out exactly who made the thing but it is
still in prime condition.
