I thought your quartet was going to enter the talent contest.
Don't the preliminary rounds start on Wednesday anymore?

We're scheduled to sing before the judges on Saturday. I'm not sure about
the other days, but I think perhaps it's ALL done in one day, that being
Saturday.

Well, if I remember correctly, there were about 50 quartets in the
competition last year. Can't imagine the judges can get through that many in
one day.

I haven't been to the NQC sinc it was in Nashville, about the first 2
or 3 times I attended In Memphis on Saturday Night that was what they
called "The Parade of Quartets", and they had about 52 quartets appear
on stage-(of course since there were so many they only sang 3 or 4
songs. So the convention has changed and had when I attended the
convention in Nashville in 72 & 73(the year "Big Chief" Wetherington
passed away, I believe that was the year Andrea Crouch took about 45
minutes.

I just asked my wife about this (as she coordinates everything for us)...
she said Friday is for soloists and Saturday is for quartets / groups. So
yes, they are all doing it in one day.

We were told we have 5 minutes max, one song, no talking.

We have also been told (not by our contact, but by some folk that are
supposedly in the know) that stage presence is at least 50% of your score
(appearance, actions etc...) and obviously quality of sound and blend the
remainder.

Honestly I don't expect us to win, but we are hoping to gain some exposure.
We'd like to expand our travel horizons a bit and do some full week touring
during the 2010 summer season... and would like to be booked heavily in
environments were we can earn enough to cover all expenses including
whatever we ultimately decide to tour in. (Bus etc...)

We have never taken the first cent as income, in fact at this point we
haven't even taken expense or gas money but we're busy enough now that we'll
soon start to at least try to cover travel expenses when we can. Our
calendar is reasonably filled, but my goodness we church folk can be
tight!!!! LOL

Singing SoGos is TRULY the passion of all of us... it is our ministry, and
that's how we approach it. We'd all love to do it full time, but truth is,
we all have decent jobs and we simply couldn't afford to take the necessary
leap into what is at best a minimum wage profession....

Appreciate you keeping us in your thoughts and prayers,

in one day.
I just asked my wife about this (as she coordinates everything for us)...
she said Friday is for soloists and Saturday is for quartets /
groups.
So
yes, they are all doing it in one day.
We were told we have 5 minutes max, one song, no talking.
We have also been told (not by our contact, but by some folk that are
supposedly in the know) that stage presence is at least 50% of your score
(appearance, actions etc...) and obviously quality of sound and
blend
the
We have never taken the first cent as income, in fact at this point we
haven't even taken expense or gas money but we're busy enough now
that
we'll
soon start to at least try to cover travel expenses when we can. Our
calendar is reasonably filled, but my goodness we church folk can be
tight!!!! LOL
Singing SoGos is TRULY the passion of all of us... it is our
ministry,
and
that's how we approach it. We'd all love to do it full time, but
truth
is,
we all have decent jobs and we simply couldn't afford to take the necessary
leap into what is at best a minimum wage profession....
Appreciate you keeping us in your thoughts and prayers,

Wes, I hope that you win, back n 1962 my brother Larry won the soloist
contest and helped the judges in 1963. Cecil Blackwood presented him
with a trophy that is on our mantel now.

Was winning closely linked to a recording contract back in 1962?

It wasn't then Wes but it may be now. Cecil Blackwood said to my
brother at a concert the Blackwoods held in Galena, Ka. "why don't you
record an album" so Larry went to Mark V studios in Greenville,SC, So
times have changed, and I hope that gets you a contract now.

I may be confused, but I think this entire event is sponsored by and / or
connected to Eddie Crook, so there's got to be a recording contract hidden
in there somewhere!!! LOL

It sounds like that to me Wes.
James

I stand corrected. It is definitely NOT Eddie Crook this year. They
sponsored in years past.

Honestly it was an awesome three days. I would encourage you to find a way
to go next year if you possibly can. Just being able to visit the artists
up close and personal makes it such an amazing experience.
