Hello Group!

I need some help! Does anyone know any history on the song "Just One Rose
Will Do" It could be named "Just A Rose Will Do" It is a very old song and I
can remember hearing it many times as a child but I do not know the song
writer, quartet that sang it or anything else about he song.

I would really like to know as much history about this song as well as where
I might obtain a copy(especially a performance track or karaoke version.
Even sheet music would be good.) as this song has been requested by my
father who would like this song sang at his funeral. I hope I am not in a
rush to get this information since he is still alive and doing well to be 75
years young, but he is making a few plans along and along for the time that
he will make that journey home and this is the only song he has requested.
He also only wants just one red rose on his casket. All others should just
donate the money to a local charity in his name.

I have contacted the local radio station and they have never heard of it
since they are crossing over to Praise and Worship from S/G, like so many
others, I am sorry to say.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance...

I have it on a re-released cassette I bought at Walmart. The cassette is of
the Prophets, featuring Big Lew. I also may have sheet music of it. I'll
have to look.

If you go here: http://www.yahoo.com and type it in just as you have
it (with the quote marks as well), you'll get about 150 matches -
might be something in that lot worth reading...

Here's the history from the Gospel Music Association of the man who wrote
the song: -- John Alexander "J.A." McClung (1894-1942). He is in the
Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame. "Just A Rose" was one of the last two
songs he wrote. As for recordings, I believe a lot of the gospel quartets
and mixed groups of the 1950s recorded the song (including the Blackwood
Brothers and the Speer Family) as did country artists like Red Foley and
some bluegrass performers. If I recall correctly, a white gospel singer
called Little Troy Lumpkin had a popular version of the song in the Southern
Gospel field. Little Troy didn't have a group but other name groups like
the Statesmen would back him up. There used to be a lot of great stories
told about Little Troy. Hovie Lister apparently use to register him at
hotels as "Justa Rose." I hope my memory is correct on this. In any case,
here's the writer's history.

Born at Talihina, Oklahoma on January 1, 1894. His parents were Frank and
Lusenda McClung. His father died when John was but one year old and his
mother encouraged him to be self-reliant as he grew up and to help others
when possible. Educated in public schools of Poteau, Oklahoma and Carthage,
Missouri, he studied music with some very fine teachers...J.A. McClung began
singing at the age of 13. He composed many fine gospel songs; among them
"Jesus, The Rock", "I'd Like To Talk It Over With Him", and "He Had No Place
To Rest". He promoted Gospel quartets and other musical organizations. He
was active in radio work and recording. He was owner and president of
Hartford Musical Institute, owned Hartford Music Company, and served as
president for several years of Sebastian County Arkansas Singing Convention.
Mr. McClung was married to Miss Minnie G. Cunningham in 1927 and there were
6 children born to this union. Just before he passed away on July 23, 1942,
his last two songs were written: "You Are The Silver Lining" and "Just A
Rose Will Do". He is buried in Centerpoint Cemetery at Hartford, Arkansas.

Lyrics from Sullivan Family site (they are a country gospel group):

JUST A ROSE WILL DO

When time shall come for my leaving
When I bid you adieu
Don't spend your money for flowers
Just a rose will do.

CHORUS

I'll go to a beautiful garden
At last when life's work is through.
Don't spend your money for flowers
Just a rose will do.

2.

I'll need no organization
To make a bid to-do,
I'll need no fine decorations,
Just a rose will do.

3.

Just have an old-fashioned preacher
To preach a sermon or two
Don't spend your money for flowers
Just a rose will do.
